Students begin the Language Arts block with 10 minutes of independent reading (a novel of their choice). I encourage students to get into the daily habit of reading even if it is for 10 minutes before they go to bed. We finished reading the 1994 Newbery Medal winning novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. We are currently reading Madeleine L'Engle's 1962 classicA Wrinkle in Time . We are working on reading comprehension and discussing different themes covered in the book.
Students will also be reading various fiction and non-fiction texts to develop their language and reading comprehension skills.
Communication skills are important at every level. Grade 6's will be working to improve different skills: capitalization, punctuation, grammar, sentence and paragraph construction.
Printing and typing are a part of the publishing process. Students have started practising cursive writing and typing on the Chromebooks.
