Students begin the Language Arts block with 10 minutes of independent reading (a novel of their choice). I encourage students to get into the daily habit of reading even if it is for 10 minutes before they go to bed. They will be entering the titles they have read into their reading log. We have also started WOW time (we're outstanding writers!) at the beginning of each block. Students write for 10 minutes given different writing prompts.
We are currently reading a novel for our read aloud sessions - The Giver by Lois Lowry. We will work on reading comprehension and discuss different themes covered in the book.
EQAO reading exercises will be assigned every Monday. They are to complete the questions in the Google form that can be found on the homework page. These questions are due the following Monday. The short fiction and non-fiction texts will help develop their language and reading comprehension skills.
We are currently working on persuasive letter writing and how to organize our ideas.
Communication skills are important at every level. Grade 6's will be working to improve different skills: spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, sentence and paragraph construction.
Printing and typing are a part of the publishing process. Students have started practising cursive writing and typing on the Chromebooks.
